Does Your Water Need an Upgrade?

hand-holding-glass-of-waterYou might be wondering what we mean by this—“My water? What’s wrong with my water?!”

We get it—this probably isn’t something you think about too often. But we want to encourage you otherwise. Some water quality problems can be quite harmful, after all. The water you use for cooking, cleaning, and drinking has many miles to go from the water treatment plant to your home, and on the way has the potential to pick up harmful contaminants.

And then there are mineral deposits, too. Namely, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Now, these minerals are not harmful for you to ingest, but over time they are very harmful to your plumbing system and quality of life. Read on as we uncover the problems associated with what’s called hard water and what you can do about it!

The Problem with Hard Water

Mineral deposits build up, creating something called scaling within your plumbing pipes. Scaling hardens, and makes it harder for water to flow through. Plus, it begins to corrode the actual pipes, leading to problems like leaks and other water quality issues. But how do you know if you have hard water?

The Clothes You Wash Fade Easily

Have you ever noticed that your colorful clothing seems to fade a lot faster than they should, or even that the fibers start breaking down, creating tears and holes in your clothing more easily? The harshness of hard water could be to blame.

Hard water mineral buildup gets into your clothing, making it feel dingy, scratchy, and rough.

Showers Aren’t Refreshing

Have you ever stepped out of the shower to discover that your hair feels slimy when still wet or dry and brittle once it’s dried? Perhaps you’ve also noticed your nails seem brittle and there’s a bit of a residue on your skin after you dry off. What happens with hard water is that soap and shampoo aren’t able to dissolve as easily, so you’re left feeling what’s leftover from the products you use in the shower, rather than feeling refreshed.

You’ve Had Unexplained Plumbing Problems

Whether it’s pipe clogs or corroded plumbing leading to leaks, hard water can certainly be the issue here. This is definitely more likely to occur in a home that’s had the same plumbing for 20-30+ years, but it something to be aware of regardless.

“What Can I Do?”

Have a whole-house water softener installed! This helps reduce the mineral deposits that build up so you can have better showers, less problems with clothing, and fewer risks to your plumbing system.  Faucet water filters simply won’t do the trick. To really get rid of your hard water problem, you need a whole-home solution! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team to learn more.
