It’s a quiet afternoon during a summer heatwave, and you’re happy at home enjoying a nice book with the air conditioning running. That is, until the system abruptly shuts off. You put your ears up to the vents but there’s no sound coming from it, not even the sound of a fan whirring. The panic sets in as you realize that your home is going to get a lot hotter in only a few hours. What do you do?
This is an unfortunate occurrence for a lot of our customers. Air conditioners are under a lot of pressure during the summer, and this leads to breakdowns happening even with systems that are in perfectly good shape.
First, start off by calling our team and scheduling AC repair in Cedar Rapids as quickly as possible. Then, when you’ve got the situation under control, make sure you follow our tips to stay cool and collected.
1. Stay Hydrated
When temperatures are hot, we tend to get rid of heat by sweating. This is actually a very important process since the sweat evaporating off of our bodies actually cools us down. This is why we have a leg up when compared to furry animals that don’t sweat like us.
However, this process uses a lot of water and it’s a reason why we need to stay hydrated throughout the entire day. Drink plenty of water and feel free to mix fresh fruits or juices with your water if you need electrolytes, especially after a workout.
2. Stay Comfortable
We know that your style might involve wearing cool jackets or sweatshirts, but hot summer days are not the ideal time for those articles of clothing.
When temperatures are hot, make sure you wear loose, breathable clothing like shorts, t-shirts, and anything made out of linen. This will let the breeze flow around parts of your body where sweat can be evaporated and you can cool off.
3. Use Fans
Fans are an excellent way to stay cool while your air conditioner is being repaired. If you have ceiling fans, now is the time to use them!
4. Create a Draft
If you open the windows on both sides of your home, you can create a draft where cool air from outside flows in one window and out another. This can be a great way to take advantage of breezy weather without having to be outside.
5. Watch Out for the Sun
You know those sleek new curtains you bought last year for your bay-style windows? They actually serve a pretty important function other than just looking nice!
Curtains and blinds are going to be your best friend during the hottest days of the summer, specifically because they block out the sun when it’s too hot. Back in the olden days, before air conditioning was invented, people would congregate indoors where the sun couldn’t bake the room and cause the temperature to increase. Use your curtains or blinds to halt sunlight and enjoy a cooler temperature inside as a result.
