Why are burst pipes emergencies?
During the winter, water in pipes can freeze and as it expands it can eventually cause a rupture along the pipe. A burst pipe is considered a plumbing emergency because typically the once frozen water will come pouring out through the breaks in the pipe. This can cause serious damage to the electrical wiring and the structure of your home, leading to even more extensive problems further down the line. That is why it is important for you to take action immediately if the pipe has burst. You should turn off the main water valve, and the electricity as well.
Don’t try to fix the problem on your own. Sometimes attempting to do this can only make the situation worse. You should call us as soon as you get the opportunity, so we can take the problem off your hands.
How can sump pumps prevent flooding emergencies?
One of the best things that you can do to prevent your basement from flooding is to have a sump pump installed. A sump pump is installed in the lowest part of a crawlspace or a basement, and helps prevent flooding by keeping the area underneath the building dry.
In most cases, sump pumps are installed inside of sump pits. When water flows inside of sump pits, the sump pump will pump the water out of the pit. The pump will also keep the water away from the building keeping the crawlspace or basement dry.
Some common situations where sump pumps come in useful are:
- Overflowing water from a drain.
- Flooding due to rain.
- Water seeping into the home due to being in a low–lying area.
A small amount of water can cause a lot of costly damage. A wet basement is also a health hazard. Moisture creates the ideal environment for mildew and mold growth. This can cause breathing and health problems.
Just like all other types of plumbing equipment, sump pumps require regular maintenance. Sump pumps will need to be inspected at least once a year. If a sump pump runs frequently due to weather conditions or water drainage, then they will need to be inspected more frequently, so its lifespan can be increased.
How can you prevent clogged toilet emergencies?
A toilet clog can be very messy. It can also damage pipes and flooring, which can warrant the need for costly repairs. One of the key things that you can do to prevent clogged toilet emergencies is to watch what is flushed down the toilet.
- Facial tissues
- Coffee grounds
- Floss
- Paper towels
- Napkins
- Medications
Toilets are really designed to only flush human waste and a certain amount of toilet tissue. Avoid flushing large wads of toilet paper in one flush. Furthermore, you should avoid storing items at the top of the tank. Soap, ornaments, combs, brushes and other items can very easily fall into the toilet and cause a clog.
